Stupid Girl!

After the SCOTUS ruling on Friday, 6/24, I revisited the Garbage song, “Stupid Girl” with front woman Shirley Manson. I remember hearing it when it came out…catchy and mildly punk. I knew some stupid girls…you know, the girls that put other girls down, exclude them and bully them…yeah, those girls… they’re stupid and we all know them!

I never really thought about what the lyrics meant. Aside from the line “I can’t believe you fake it, can’t believe you fake it…Stupid girl.” I always thought that line was about faking an orgasm, and I wondered why ANY woman would ever do that…, wait…what? Why would you want your lover to pleasure you the same way, over and over again, but you didn’t achieve orgasm?

I dug deeper on Shirley Manson, Garbage, and “Stupid Girl”. Shirley’s 55 now, living in Edinburgh, Scotland. (where she lived when she orginally became the front woman for Garbage).

In a interview from 1998 she explained how she was badly bullied by a girl in secondary school, and how that girl had “made her life a misery” for an entire year. But something in her SNAPPED after that…Shirley wouldn’t be told what she could and couldn’t do. “I can do whatever the fuck I want”.

Shirley went on to explain… “I had never written music before. “Stupid girl is about someone who isn’t authentic, as a result, she squanders her life trying to please, impress and manipulate others, so in love with themselves that they cease to see what’s going on in the world.” “I see alot of women distancing themselves from the idea of feminism, and it makes me ape shit crazy, because I have been so fucking privileged to travel and see the world…and one of the things that shocks me so deeply is how women are treated around the world.” “So to hear privileged white girls, bark on about…well, I don’t believe in feminism…What the fuck do you mean you don’t believe in feminism?” “It makes me so angry and crazy…and so, until that all gets sorted out…You’re damn right I’m a feminist.”

So, I want to say… to ALL you STUPID GIRLS and WOMEN in this country who use your privilege, your voice, your VOTE, against other women. You’re the reason Roe is overturned. You’re the reason we got Donald Trump. You’re the reason women can’t become more powerful in our State houses and in Congress. You’re the reason! Because you’re TOO STUPID to realize that your privilege to plea for the “unborn” is a plea AGAINST your OWN AUTONOMY, your OWN MIND… and it affects all of OUR MINDS and OUR BODIES.

Are women dead to you? Are we incapable of making BIG decisions for ourselves? No one dies unless they’re born…YOU STUPID GIRL!
